Diamond Buyers' Guide
First, determine your budget. One general rule of thumb when buying a diamond engagement ring is "two months salary." This is just a guideline, it's not carved in stone and your first consideration should be what you can comfortably afford.

Deciding on carat size is really about striking a balance between size and quality. If she prefers larger jewelry items, and you are working within a budget, you can still find a larger diamond of excellent quality by selecting one which is graded slightly lower in terms of color and clarity.

Remember that slender fingers make small diamonds look bigger. If she has small fingers, a 1-carat diamond will look proportionately large -- and an even larger stone may appear stunningly big!

Think about what sort of setting will hold the diamond. You'll have to be sure that the setting you choose is made to fit the carat weight of your diamond.

What About A Certificate?

When you are shopping for a diamond, you may hear that a particular diamond is “certified.” This usually refers to a quality analysis report issued by the American Gem Society Laboratory, Gemological Institute of America, or other laboratory.

But AGS does not "certify" diamonds

AGS Laboratory quality analysis reports reflect all of the factors which help to determine how a diamond is valued. A color grade, a clarity grade, a cut grade and a precise weight are each stated on the report.

As you look for assurances, and you have every right to expect some assurance when you make a major purchase, your best guarantee is the American Gem Society member store where you shop for your diamond. AGS diamond graders are trained in the use of the GIA diamond grading scale as well, and can use that scale appropriately should you want to make comparisons. And AGS members stand behind the value statement they issue regarding each and every diamond they sell.

In the end, remember that AGS member stores are accountable to you, the customer. You can rely on the AGS grades and weights that establish the value of the diamond you are considering.

If a “certificate” is desired, always insist on an AGS Laboratory Quality Analysis report.
